Director of Human Resources & Risk Manager

Location: Davenport, CA

Big Creek Lumber Company, a pioneer in sustainable forestry and leading supplier of lumber and building materials in central California, seeks a Director of Human Resources & Risk Manager to be headquartered at our Davenport administration office. This position will service our diverse, vertically integrated business including our forestry operations, manufacturing facility and six central California retail lumber yards. We have a total staff of approximately 225 employees, many who have decades of service with the company and take great pride in the products and services we provide.  This is a hands-on position responsible for oversight of all human resources and insurance activities. An established, knowledgeable, competent staff is in place.

What you’ll do:

  • Develop and implement Human Resources programs
    • Make effective policy decisions that are consistent with company values
    • Oversee all aspects of Human Resources including employee relations, recruiting, compensation, benefits and training to create a positive work environment and ensure legal compliance
    • Coach managers on human resource issues
    • Analyze employment data, report trends and make recommendations
    • Support effective succession planning for a high-quality, long-term workforce
    • Administer our 401k retirement plan and serve on the plan administrative committee
  • Manage insurance programs
    • Research available lines of coverage and make recommendations
    • Ensure that renewal applications are completed and submitted timely
    • Act as part of a team that chooses appropriate coverage and risk levels
    • Ensure that claims are handled promptly and effectively
    • Ensure that audit materials are submitted timely
  • Ensure that government reports are submitted timely and accurately
  • Oversee a variety of legal and insurance claims
    • Manage of legal claims with outside counsel and insurance providers
    • Oversee insurance claims
    • Settle minor property damage claims
  • Effectively review, analyze and summarize legal documents and take appropriate action
    • Contracts and agreements
    • Lawsuits
  • Promote practical, effective legal compliance and risk management throughout the company
  • Provide accurate, timely, relevant recommendations to senior management and board of directors on a wide variety of legal, legislative and regulatory issues impacting HR and risk management
  • Effectively represent the company to

  • Work closely with Safety Manager to ensure compliance, effective safety programs and successful claims management
  • Collaborate with all other departments
  • Advise on human resources, consumer-protection, advertising law, regulatory compliance, etc., working closely and collaboratively with internal teams to provide business-friendly solutions

What you bring:

  • BS/BA in a business-related field
  • Strong practical business legal experience adequate to
    • Review, analyze and evaluate legal documents
    • Review and modify agreements and contracts
    • Respond appropriately to lawsuits, working with outside counsel
    • Draft effective policies
  • PHR or equivalent education/experience in human resources management
  • Business management experience including
    • Excellent business judgement that supports company values, culture and goals
    • Practical understanding of financial statements and accounting practices
  • Experience in managing business insurance and risk management programs including
    • Evaluating risk
    • Negotiating insurance purchases that meet company risk tolerance and financial needs
    • Ensuring effective claims management
    • Administering fully-insured and self-insured programs
    • Developing and implementing loss prevention plans
    • Familiar with insurance industry policies and procedures regarding claims and reserves, claims analysis, and adjustment techniques
    • Familiar with injury and damage claims investigation, procedures and practices of accident prevention and safety standards

What your schedule will be:

  • Full-time; once established and knowledgeable about our business, a hybrid schedule may be negotiated, generally with an in-person contribution of at least 3 days/week
  • Occasional travel, mainly day trips to our retail locations with some overnight trips for relevant conferences
  • Monday-Friday
