Now Accepting Scholarship Applications

Young man with a cowboy hat standing with scholarship check in front of a wooden wallWhen Bud and Lud McCrary started Big Creek Lumber eighty years ago, they were just beginning adulthood, an age when many are still planning their next steps. Their path to success was forged through real world experience, including trade training gained during their service in World War II and continued skill building in the years that followed. By mastering mechanical, forestry, and business practices through hands on work they established a company grounded in humbleness, hard work, craftsmanship, resilience and an enduring commitment to growth and learning.

That legacy continues through the McCrary Family Scholarship, which supports graduating seniors pursuing careers in forestry or the skilled trades. Now in its sixth year, the program offers a $2,000 one-time award, with the opportunity to apply for a one-time renewal. Applications for 2026 are open through 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 24, 2026.

Eligible applicants must be high school seniors attending a school within 25 miles of a Big Creek Lumber location and plan to enroll in a forestry program or a trade, vocational, or truck driving school in Fall 2026.

Since its inception, the scholarship has awarded $42,000 to local students, many of whom have received renewal support as they continue their education. Through this program, Big Creek Lumber remains committed to helping young people gain practical skills, build sustainable careers and carry forward the tradition of forestry and the trades.
